65 pages Cardiovascular diseases account for an increasing proportion of mortality in developing countries. The human suffering and economic costs due to hospitalization and treatment are immense. All sectors of the community, together with health professionals, academics and nongovernmental organizations must join forces to help prevent the high-risk lifestyles that contribute to the rising incidence of cardiovascular diseases. This publication aims to increase awareness among health policy-makers and the health profession of cardiovascular diseases as a problem of increasing concern to public health. It analyses the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean Region and reviews feasible preventative action and intervention strategies against the cardiovascular diseases commonly encountered in the Region.
